Science Fair News

We would like to announce the Pine Ridge Elementary 5th Grade Science Fair! This science fair will be a tremendous way for you to showcase your knowledge of the Scientific Method. You will also get to “show-off” your research and presentation skills through conducting your investigation and presenting your tri-fold display board to other Pine Ridge students on the science fair tour dates.

To discover the thousands of ideas available for your project, please visit www.sciencebuddies.com. Locate the tabs at the top, and find the purple “Project Ideas” tab. Click on the “Project Ideas” tab. From here, you can browse project ideas, or use the Topic Selection Wizard to help you find a project suited to your interests and the timeframe for your project. Be sure to choose an investigation that you have time to conduct, and that you have materials for (or can easily obtain materials for). Also, choose a “safe” project or have parental supervision.

Once you have selected your investigation idea, you will conduct your experiment(s) and chronicle your investigation through pictures, graphs, charts, etc., and a paragraph for each part of the Scientific Method. You will display your investigation on a tri-fold display board. Please visit the following link for the layout of your tri-fold display board: http://www.stevespangler.com/science-fair-secrets/science-fair-911-display-boards/. Tri-fold display boards are available at most retailers including Michael’s, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. Don’t forget to create a “catchy” title to grab your audience’s attention. All sections of the display must be typed!

You will receive a major grade for your project design and work. Please see the attached rubric to determine what criteria you will be graded on.

Please ask your teacher for guidance if you are having any issues. Your project is due on Friday, May 25. The tours by the other grade levels will take place on Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31.  During the tours, students from the other grade levels will approach your display board whereby you can then give them a brief synopsis (overview) of your investigation. Be sure to “WOW” your audience.

Parents are invited to attend the science fair tours! Tour times are 9:30-11:00 and 1:30-3:00 on the 30th of May, and the 31st of May.

Remember to have fun and to be safe!

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! I am so happy and grateful to be a part of the Buffalo Trail community and especially the wonderful 5th grade team. This is my 2nd year at BTE and my 12th year of teaching. I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in Kentucky and Colorado. Before moving to Denver three years ago, I lived in Northern Kentucky near Cincinnati, Ohio. I earned a BS from the University of Kentucky and my MAT from the University of Louisville. In 2007, I became a National Board Certified Teacher with an emphasis in Early/Middle Childhood Reading and Language Arts. In my free time, I love to read, ride my bike, try new restaurants, and go to concerts/sports events. I love cheering my teams on during basketball season, hiking, and skiing. I am loving Colorful Colorado and look forward to our new adventures together!
